CVTA CHALLENGE LADDER
2008 Season: April 1, 2008 – September 14, 2008
Purpose:
The purpose of this tennis challenge ladder is to allow all CVTA
tennis players, from the beginner novice to the serious, experienced
player, to meet and play other tennis enthusiasts at their own skill
levels. Whether you play only occasionally, “just for fun,” or prefer
to compete several times a week, you can meet and play a variety
of players. You will also have the opportunity to improve your play
by challenging others who are slightly more advanced. The ladder
will be internet-based via TennisEngine.Com. There will be one ladder
for women, one for men, and one for mixed doubles. The singles challenge
ladder will be played under the 20-point system. The mixed doubles
ladder will be a 15-point system. In both singles and mixed, members
gain points by winning matches but also gain points when losing
close matches, so it's possible to achieve a reasonable ranking
by being an active player; more information.
Eligibility and Participation:
To be eligible to participate, you must be a CVTA member in good
standing (2008 dues paid) and must be 16 years or older. There is
no fee for CVTA members to participate.

Initial Standings and Format:
This ladder is established initially by the NTRP rating of the
players who sign up. The ladder is designed for singles or mixed
doubles play. New challengers receive one open challenge to play
anyone (or team) they would like. The standard rules of the USTA
apply to ladder matches. Matches are the best two out of three sets,
with a 7-point tiebreaker. Should players split sets, then a third
set will be played, instead of a third tiebreaker.
Challenge Ladder Guidelines:
Please see guidelines for the ladder on: http://www.tennisengine.com/info/guidelines.asp.
There you will find guidelines for the following :
- Setting up matches
- League (aka "ladder") play
- How to record your score after the match
- Sportsmanship
To Review How You are Ranked on the Ladder:
CVTA Ladders use a 20-point “leapfrog” system for singles, and
a 15-point system for mixed doubles. To review the ranking system
for the 20 point system, see:
http://www.tennisengine.com/info/ranksys_20.asp
For the 15 point system, see:
http://www.tennisengine.com/info/ranksys_15.asp
Tips for Greater Enjoyment:
A new member on a challenge ladder may find that the first one
or two matches played on a ladder appear to be mismatches (in terms
of skill levels). Don't be discouraged - as the season progresses,
the ladder sorts itself into order. You will soon discover other
members with whom you can play comfortably. In addition to the relative
rankings, you may find it useful to look at the results of specific
matches. This can give you a further clue to the levels other players,
and gives some indication of players that you may want to challenge.
So don't just sit there - make a phone call! Like you, the other
members of this challenge ladder are eager to play. Regardless of
your frequency or level of play, there are tennis matches waiting
for you!
